VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LIBRARY

Some of the volunteer jobs available at the East Bonner County Library District:

  • Shelf reading (checking each book to make sure it is in the proper place).
  • Placing returned materials back on the shelves so they are ready to be checked out again.
  • Assisting the Youth Services Librarian in preparing programs for pre-school aged children and youth.
  • Clerical & other jobs such as sorting donated magazines or recycling newspapers.
  • Assist in preparing new library materials for circulation and mend damaged books and magazines.
  • Tutoring students of all ages and/or needs.

Below is a list of activities in which volunteers can participate in order to help the library. Please mark those of interest to you and for which you feel you qualify.

 
 
Assist with occasional special events. Prepare crafts for weekly children’s story and teen programs. Other special assignments may include preparing displays and reading lists, creating flannel boards and other props.
 
 
Place library materials in proper shelf locations & straighten area. Duties may also involve emptying book drop bins and/or placing items in proper order on library carts in preparation of shelving. This is also an excellent method of exploring the diverse collection of materials available in the library. Training is provided by library staff. Requirements: Attention to detail, ability to file alphabetically and numerically, ability to lift 10-15 pounds, bend, kneel, stretch & stoop while retaining balance, vision good enough to read small numbers & letters. Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week for 2 months.
 
 
Assist in preparing library materials (books, CD’s, DVD’s, etc.) for circulation. Mend damaged books and magazines. Requires training, accuracy, attention to detail and fine motor skills. Also requires a long term commitment and willingness to work a scheduled shift of at least two or more hours once a week.
 
 
Tutor students of all ages and/or need in a variety of subjects through the library’s Literacy Program. Requirements: Good writing, reading, and/or math skills; interest in helping others improve their skills. Must pass criminal background check (at library expense). Commitment: Minimum of 1-2 hours per week for at least 3 months.
 
 
Occasional need for help with special events & projects of short duration, lasting from a few hours to a week. Activities may include serving food, folding/distributing flyers, helping at the fair, setting up for meetings or presentations, etc.
